Bernard M. Sheets, 86, of Dunning, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2017. He was born on July 9, 1930 to William and Rachel (Main) Sheets in Arnold. At the age of 9, Bernard and his family moved to a ranch north of Stapleton. At the age of 14, he went to work for the McGooden Ranch. This was to be the start of his lifelong career dedicated to the ranching way of life. Whether it was working for area ranchers or ranching for himself, Bernard lived his entire life in the beautiful Sandhills of Nebraska.
He married Dora Dean Mathauser on November 27, 1955. Together they raised seven children. They are Dan, Bill, Joe, Bernadean, Lucille, Valerie and Brenda.
Bernard was preceeded in death by his wife Dora Dean; his parents William and Rachel; and his two brothers, William (Billy) and Paul.
He is survived by his children, Dan of Dunning; Bill and wife Kim of Cody, Wyoming; Joe and wife Darla of Whitman; Bernadean of Goldsby, Oklahoma; Lucille and her husband, Paul of Thedford; Valerie of Texas; and Brenda of Broken Bow. He is also survived by his sister Colleen of Burwell and his brother Donald and his wife of Burwell.
He leaves behind seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A private burial was held at the Dunning Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Community Hall in Dunning on June 9 at 5:00 p.m. with a luncheon provided by the local ladies of Dunning.
