Dean L. Swanson, 80, long-time resident of North Platte, NE passed away on May 29, 2022 peacefully in his sleep at his home.

He was born on August 16, 1941 in Cairo, NE the son of Edward and Sophia (Erikson) Swanson.

Dean graduated in 1959 from Cairo High School.  He hired on the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha in 1959 and had a career as a machinist that spanned over 42 years, retiring in 2002.  While working on the railroad he was affectionately known as “Deano”.  He met the love of his life Doris Joy in 1962, and they were married on September 5, 1964 in Arnold, NE.  One year later they had a daughter Charlene, and in 1966 they moved to North Platte for Dean’s work with the UPRR.  In 1970 they had another daughter Karen.  Dean’s daughters were the highlight of his life.  Dean and Doris loved dancing, bingo and bowling, and his all-time favorite activity was gambling.  He enjoyed out of town trips, calling BINGO games, gardening, and taking care of his yard.

Those left to cherish Dean’s memory are daughters, Charlene (Alan) Burnside of Stapleton and Karen (Keith) Faler of North Platte; grandchildren, Priscilla (Greg) Vega, Dean Burnside and Keith Faler III (lovingly referred to as “Shorty”); great-grandchildren, Avery and Micah Vega; special companions his cats “Loves” and “Spice”; and a sister, Eleanor Belke of Doniphan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris of 52 years; and sister, Virginia.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2022 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with Eric Wiezorek officiating.  Burial will follow at North Platte Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 2nd at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which has been entrusted with the arrangements.
