E. Helen Leaf, 96, Kearney, died Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Mother Hull Home in Kearney.  Funeral Services will be on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney.  Pastor Dean Pofahl will officiate and burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Monday, March 26, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and also 1 hour prior to services on Tuesday all at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the family, to be designated later.  A message of condolence, tribute or memory can be left at  Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney are in charge of arrangements.

Helen, formerly a longtime resident of Thedford, NE was called home on March 21, 2018.  She was born on June 9, 1921, near Johnstown, NE to Fred and Rose (Jelinek) Micheel.  She grew up near Johnstown, NE and graduated from Wood Lake in 1938.  Helen married Robert “Ward” White in 1941 and the couple settled in Brownlee, NE.  To this union, one daughter, Sharilyn (White) Hoos was born in 1942.  Ward was drafted into the Army and entered into the service in 1943.  He was sent overseas in April of 1944 and was killed in heavy enemy fire in September 1944.  Helen then moved to Thedford, NE.  She worked at the Citizens State Bank in Thedford for several years before becoming a teacher.  She taught South of Thedford by the Dismal River.  In 1959, Helen moved to Kearney, NE where she met and then married Alfred C. Leaf in 1963.  Helen worked at the First National Bank until retirement.  She enjoyed cooking and baking, watching Husker football, and spending time with her family and was also a member of the American Legion Auxilary Steidley-Kayton Unit 230 in Thedford, NE for 71 years.  Helen was a devoted and loving mother and very proud of her family.  She was excited to become a grandmother to her four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.  She was known for her kind heart, feisty sense of humor, and unconditional love to all that knew her.

Survivors of the immediate family include; daughter, Shari (Ron) Hoos of Amherst, NE; Grandchildren, Monte (Tammy) Trampe of Amherst, NE, Wade Trampe of York, NE, Stacy (Damon) Shada of Grand Island, NE, and Stephanie (Craig) Simmons, of Miller, NE; Great-Grandchildren, Tristen Trampe, Tosha Freeland, Alisha Trampe, Keisha Trampe, Dalton Trampe, McKayla Shada, Kaden Shada, Kanyon Shada, Scout Simmons, and Adalee Simmons, Great-Great Grandchildren, Easton and Bryndle; Sister, Winnie Cooley of Mullen, NE.

Helen was preceded in death by an infant brother; her parents, Fred and Rose Micheel; husbands; Ward White and Alfred Leaf; sisters, Elaine Ballard and Thelma Sanders.
