John Edward Nelson, age 89, of Arnold, NE, died Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at the Good Life Center, Callaway, NE.He was born January 27, 1928, in Holdrege, NE, to Carl Edward and Almida Matilda (Minnie) Bjorklund Nelson. He lived in Phelps County until the family purchased a farm north of Arnold. There is where he gleaned his love of farming, horses, the beauty of nature, the talent of fixing anything with what was available and the friendship of neighbors and Arnoldites. Many still remember him as “Buddy” or “Bud” which his sisters nicknamed him. This stuck with him through much of his adult life.On July 15, 1950, he married Betty Jayne Potter and welcomed her son Roland Kerry. To this union two daughters were born, Sandra and Susan. They divorced many years later.In January, 1995, he and Marion Fuller were married. Together they enjoyed many years of traveling, music, family and friend get-togethers.His many lifetime jobs and adventures included: Making tools at Hughes Aircraft in California to build planes for the war; traveling with harvest crews, custom baling, driving a feed truck, selling seed corn, Arnold school bus driver and custodian, and U.S. mail carrier.His many enjoyments included breeding, raising, training and selling Quarter Horses. He received an award from the American Quarter Horse Association for 20 years of respected participation. He was in Rotary for many years and he loved working with wood, especially whittling. He always looked forward to traveling and experiencing different cultures and ethnic foods.Preceding him in death were his parents, sisters and their spouses Helen (Neil) Pickett, Marie (Harold) Dahme, and Bernice (Dwight) Steele an infant brother Peter and youngest sister Betty Ann Nelson; brother-in-law, Lloyd Beltz; former wife, Betty Jayne Nelson; and wife, Marion Fuller Nelson.Left to honor and remember him are his sister, Jean Beltz; children Ret. Col. R. Kerry (Elizabeth) Potter, Sandra (Kevin) Jespersen and Susan Nelson; step-sons Bill (Gail) Fuller, Bert (Nancy) Fuller and step-daughter Kathy (Scott) Kral; 13 devoted and loving grandchildren (especially Eric;) his beautiful great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.Services were held Monday, November 13, at the United Methodist Church in Arnold. Pastor Bill Williams officiated. Music was by Melody Jennings and Men on the Mountain. Selections were “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Arnold Rotary members were the honorary pallbearers. Pallbearers were Allen Crow, Mike Steele, Bill Steele and Russell Steele. Memorials are suggested to the Arnold Cemetery or Arnold School Foundation. Interment was in the Arnold Cemetery. Arnold Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
