Margaret Eastburn, age 90, of Arnold, died July 12, 2017 at Great Plains Health in North Platte.
She was born June 15, 1927, at York, NE, to Cornelius and Sylvia (Gess) McCarthy. The family moved to the Eureka Valley area and she graduated from Arnold High School in 1944.
She married Jim Eastburn on July 21, 1946, and the couple made their home in Arnold. From the early 1950's, they owned and operated Jim's Bar, until 1979.
She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Altar Society, DCCW and volunteered at the Thrift Shop. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Fireman's Auxiliary, and was an area chairman for the American Diabetes Association for several years, as well as chairman and volunteer of the Meals on Wheels program. She admired the scouting programs and was a dedicated volunteer for years. She served on the board of directors for the Riverview Apartments for over 20 years. Margaret often spoke of the time she put in at the Canteen during World War II in North Platte, and she was very proud of the effort of the service men and women during that time. She received the Good Neighbor Award from Aksarben in 1988. She was a member of the SAC Time Campers and enjoyed camping with friends. She also enjoyed being a cashier at Atkins Auction Service.
She was very proud of her Irish heritage and was able to visit Ireland in 2006. Her family was the highlight of her life, especially when she hosted the holidays. She was an avid sports fan and attended her grandchildren's sports and school activities. Margaret's house was the home-base for all of the family.
She was preceded in death by her husband; six brothers; two sisters; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry (Joan) of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Dan of North Platte, and Lee of Arnold; two daughters, Connie (Gary) Geiser of Cozad and Deb (Brad) Atkins of Arnold; eight grandchildren, Stephanie (Jim) Jacobson of North Platte, Kelley (Sean) Whitaker of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Scott (Robyn) Geiser of Cozad, Jessica (Brandon) Curyea of Kearney, Christa Eastburn of Chicago, Jackie Atkins of Arnold, Joe Bob (Randi) Atkins of Arnold, and Jenny Atkins of North Platte, and 12 great-grandchildren, Jamie (Robbie) Heinzen, Cole and Haley Jacobson, Logan and Dillon Geiser, Avery, Cooper, Macy and Ryker and Sofia Atkins, and Tanner and Brody Whitaker; an honorary granddaughter, Mackenzie Kulp of Arnold; daughters-in-law, Rickie McKnight of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Kim Eastburn of Haxtun, Colorado, and a sister, Mildred Pinkston of Arnold.
Memorials are suggested to St. Agnes Catholic Church or the Arnold Cemetery in her memory.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, July 16, at St. Agnes Catholic Church. The family suggests Husker apparel for the wake services, which will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 17, at the church with Father James Hunt as celebrant. Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery.
