Marlene Gaston Nutter - September 10, 1923 - August 27, 2017

Marlene Gaston Nutter was the oldest daughter of William J. and Elva L. Gaston.  She was born September 10, 1923 at Thedford, Nebraska and died August 27, 2017 at the age of 93 in Colorado Springs, CO.She lived with her family on the Gaston Ranch 3 miles east of Thedford, attending all 8 grades in the Gaston Country School.  Marlene graduated from Thomas County High School in 1938 and that fall began a 2 year teaching career in the Nebraska School System.  In the spring of 1942, Marlene traveled to Orlando, Florida where Noah L. Nutter was stationed in the Army Air Corps.  They were married on June 1, 1942.  They lived in Florida for over one year.  When Noah was scheduled for overseas duty, Marlene moved back to Thedford, where she lived for several months.  During that time a son, Barry Lynn, was born.  Later when Noah was transferred to an air base in California, Marlene joined him there with a new baby son.  They lived in California until December 1945.  The war was over and Noah received an honorable discharge from the Army Air Corps as a Master Sergeant Line Chief.Marlene and family returned to Thedford, Nebraska, where they lived for 8 years with Noah serving as elected Thomas County Treasurer for 2 terms.  During this time a daughter, Sandra, was born. Then the family made several moves, finally settling again in California, where they lived for many years.During their married life, both Noah and Marlene attended college and were employed in the California School System.  Marlene received a Bachelor of Science degree plus extra hours toward a Master’s degree in Elementary Education.  She retired after teaching for 20 years.  She also attended flight school, where she received a Private Pilot’s License.  Marlene and Noah both enjoyed flying, so they spent many hours in their private plane flying over the central and western parts of the US.  Marlene also enjoyed arts and crafts, gardening and cooking, but most of all she was devoted to her family, the joy of her life.She was a member of the Presbyterian Church,  Thedford vicinity Women’s Club, Airplane Owners & Pilots Association, and a life member of the California Teachers Association, National Education Association, Disabled Veterans Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and California Retired Teachers Association,.When Marlene and Noah retired from teaching, they moved back to Thedford, where they ranched for about 25 years.  They finally decided to move to independent living in North Platte, Nebraska, where after 3 years, her beloved husband, Noah, passed away.  About a year later, Marlene moved to Colorado Springs to be near her daughter & family.Family members include her son Barry (Carole) Nutter, her daughter Sandra (Frank) Rakoczy, 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.  One brother, Thomas (JoAnne) Gaston survives her.  She was preceded in death by her parents, William & Elva (Keenan) Gaston; and 2 sisters, Billie (Bob) Finney and Natalie Jean (Don) Clayton.She will be missed by her family and friends.A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, September 12th at 11 AM CT at the United Church of Christ in Thedford.  A light lunch will follow.  Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery at Thedford.Memorials may be made to the United Church of Christ and the American Legion Post #230.
