Max Hickman was born June 16, 1928 to Forrest & Edna (Toombs) Hickman. He passed away May 25, 2023, 5 years to the day of his beloved wife Lois. He grew up in the Sandhills of Nebraska with two brothers and one sister. He loved to share his stories of taking care of the truck garden by herding turkeys around it to keep the grasshoppers from eating it and how his family survived the 1930’s. He had many interesting stories, living in the tie house, his mother’s squab and biscuits and how they got pigeons to nest there.
In 1945 Max graduated from Thomas County High School in Thedford, NE, the last class to graduate from that school as a new one was built following that class. After graduation he worked a number of different jobs, as he had learned to be a Jack of all trades. While working for his Aunt and Uncle he met and fell in love with Lois Siemsen. The spring of 1950 they were in a terrible car accident that kept him in the hospital for 2 1/2 months but upon recovering Max and Lois were married October 18, 1950. They lived a number of different places, mostly following work, until he was hired by Halliburton in Kimball, NE in May of 1956 and then transferred to Glendive in February of 1958 where Max and Lois raised their 4 daughters. They fell in love with Eastern Montana and the Glendive community.
He and Lois taught Hunters Safety to many young people in Glendive in the 60’s and early 70’s. Max retired from Halliburton after nearly 30 years and they enjoyed doing some traveling. They also had an antique shop called the Tin Shed out on the Country Club Road. It became a great outlet for all the treasures he would pick up at auctions and yard sales.
Max loved to be outdoors. If it wasn’t hunting then it was fishing and camping with his family and friends as often as he could.
Max was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lois, his parents, Lois’s parents & brother & sister, brother Rex, brother-in-law Dean Myers, grandson Eric, granddaughter Jolene & son-in-law Bill Wilson. He is survived by his 4 daughters Marcia (Jim) Burrows, Brenda (Bill Gorder) Hopkins, Ruby (Jerry) Jasmin & Kay Wilson, also by his sister Doris (Chuck) Bowen, his brother Dee & wife Wanda and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, one great-great grandson & many cousins and nieces and nephews.
